Coronavirus and the Caribbean: economic implications and options

IDB member countries in the Caribbean are feeling the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The lifeblood of tourism has stopped flowing to The Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica. Falling commodity prices are impacting Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. All are grappling to control a public health crisis that is straining human and financial resources.

IDB experts discuss these challenges as well as what the countries of the Caribbean can do to cope with and recover from the effects of Coronavirus. They also explore opportunities for innovation and growth.

Golda Lee Bruce is a Development Storyteller and Communications Specialist in the Caribbean Country Department of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Before joining the IDB Golda worked as a Journalist and News Anchor in her native Trinidad and Tobago. She was the Deputy Head of News at Guardian Media Limited where she led the merger of its print and broadcast newsrooms into a single digital-led operation. Golda holds a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor’s in Media and Communication from The University of the West Indies, Mona.
