A new analysis from the IDB determines that the vast majority of curricular content at child care centers in the region does not include child development indicators such as interculturality, the teaching of a second language, or peaceful conflict resolution. This is just one of the many surprising results in this new publication.
The report, authored by Christine Harris-Van Keuren and Diana Rodríguez Gómez under the supervision of IDB experts, presents a comparative analysis of early learning guidelines (ELGs) for children under 3 at child care centers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The ELGs of seven regional and 12 national programs with an updated curriculum were evaluated, representing 13 countries in the region.
The analysis included three types of programs: parenting programs (3), community-based child care (4), and center-based child care (12). In addition, two of the 12 center-based programs serve an age range older than the one covered by this research (0 to 3 years), and they appear as case studies at the end of the report. Happy reading!
