Creative Commons (CC) licenses are simple and standardized contracts that allow the editing, modification, distribution and even mass marketing of materials according to the wishes of their creator. Through these licenses, an author uses their copyright rights to ensure that any derivative version of the original work is free, which avoids the potential problems of relinquishing copyright and leaving the work in the public domain. These types of licenses have been promoters of open knowledge by allowing a new scenario of exchange and use of information away from monetization.
