Are you interested in topics related to subnational government financing? This is your opportunity to present your research work.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) and the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) have launched a call for proposals for unpublished academic studies that deal with the current situation and new challenges related to the subnational government financing of Ibero-American countries.
These organizations are seeking to expand knowledge in the following areas:
- General fiscal decentralization frameworks and their relationship with macroeconomic challenges
- Efficiency and quality of subnational spending for the wellbeing of people
- Subnational collection
- Subnational debt and financing
- Management of subnational governments
- Subnational financing and climate change
The call for proposals also includes emerging topics related to local financing, such as mechanisms of intergovernmental coordination and their effectiveness, impact of new technologies on subnational financial management, local taxes and behavioral economics, among others.
How to participate in the call for proposals?
A maximum of 12 research proposals will be selected. The proposals must be sent by June 30th, 2019 and the winners will be announced on July 14th, 2019.
The winners will have to send a final version of their work by September 16th, 2019 and will receive a grant to present their research during the VIII Ibero-American Conference of Local Financing that will take place on October 1st and 2nd, 2019 in Mexico City.
The research proposals will be evaluated by a committee formed by academics and experts in local financing from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Spain, and specialists from the IDB and ECLAC.
Interested parties can present a summary of their research in up to four pages in any of the following languages: English, Spanish or Portuguese. For more information regarding the format and how to send the proposal, please download this document (in Spanish).
What is the Ibero-American Conference on Subnational Finance?
The Conference is a joint initiative of subnational finance academics and specialists that began in Spain in 2011 with the purpose of improving the knowledge about subnational financing in Ibero-American countries. It is the main academic event related to this topic in the region. During different editions of the event, as many as 92 studies have been presented on a wide variety of topics and geographical coverage. These studies show the growing importance of local financing in the research and public policy agenda of Ibero-American and Caribbean regions.
