The Latin America and Caribbean region has achieved the fastest growth in terms of population of Internet users worldwide. This new reality brings along a series of new risks such as information theft, cyber-terrorist attacks, cyber espionage and identity theft, among others. As part of the Bank’s endeavors to support the region in the protection of cyber space, the Round Table of Experts: “Cybersecurity: Why should we take it seriously and what can we do about it?” was held at our headquarters on August 1, 2014. The event brought together renowned cybersecurity professionals such as James Andrew Lewis, Director and Senior Fellow of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS); Tucker Bailey, Partner and Global Cybersecurity Leader at McKinsey & Company, Inc. consultants; and Cheri F. McGuire, Vice-president of Global Government Affairs and Cybersecurity Policy for Symantec Co. The round table gave the Bank personnel an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the main aspects of cybersecurity (threats, costs, strategies, good practices).
In addition, acknowledging the importance of this matter for the socio-economic progress of LAC citizens, the IDB and the OAS are joining forces to support the governments of the region in the design and implementation of strategies that will enable them to deal successfully with the challenges posed by cybersecurity. On October 22-24, 2014 it was held at the IDB headquarters, the Regional Workshop on Cybersecurity Policies. The workshop gathered together management officers responsible for the design and implementation of national Cybersecurity policies from the region, along with leading experts from the academic world and the private sector and is aimed at promoting the exchange of experiences and technical knowledge on cyber policy matters and defining the elements of a cyber agenda for the region.
