Within the framework of the activities included in its Open Government agenda, the IDB collaborated with the Agency for the Development of e-Government Management and the Information and Knowledge Society (AGESIC in Spanish) of Uruguay to demonstrate its commitment to the action plan presented before the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
The DateIdea 2014 project is a contest which will enable public organizations and citizens to develop open data applications that, in turn, will make it possible to improve the functioning of public services. The initiative is directed to students, entrepreneurs, journalists, activists, companies, civil society organizations and State agencies, and consists of three phases, two of which have already been completed:
Phase I: Problems to be solved
State agencies and citizens were called upon to propose problems to be solved through public services using Information and Communication Technologies. The problems to solve had to be from the field of education, health, social policies and local government. During this phase, citizens submitted a total of 79 ideas.
Phase II: Hackathon
The Hackathon took place on September 12-13, 2014. During 27 hours of continuous work, 70 participants divided into 12 work groups -9 under the Prototype Development category and 3 under the Data Journalism category- worked on the creation of visualization and application prototypes. The activity involved telling stories from data published by the State and/or developing the proposals for problems to be solved presented in Phase 1.
Phase III: Grants
Phase III of the project is still to be carried out. This phase is associated with the initiative’s sustainability and corresponds to the provision of financing through 19 grants for the development and implementation of those solutions proposed during Phase II which were thought to be more viable and sustainable.
