Seeds for Food Security in Latin America and the Caribbean

December 21, 2023 por Soledad Balduzzi Leave a Comment

One of the main priorities of the Inter-American Development Bank is to combat food insecurity in Latin America and the Caribbean, which today affects almost 40% of the region’s population (FAO, 2023). To achieve this, it is essential to implement interventions and promote policies based on evidence and knowledge, with a multisectoral approach and that cover the agri-food system.

The Environment, Rural Development and Disaster Risk Management Division (CSD/RND) of the IDB created the series “Seeds for Food Security in Latin America and the Caribbean” in 2023, which aimed to generate and disseminate knowledge in this topic, therefore contributing to address food insecurity and malnutrition in the region, and moving towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030.

Below, we present the events held this year:

  • Inclusive Rural Transformation to Address Climate Change and Food Insecurity

This session addressed how to build more resilient and sustainable food systems in the region. It included the participation of Paul Winters, Professor and Associate Dean of the University of Notre Dame; Ana María Ibáñez, Vice-President of Sectors and Knowledge of the IDB; and Pedro Martel, Chief of the CSD/RND Division of the IDB.

  • Inclusive, Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems: Challenges and Opportunies for LAC

This event addressed the main challenges that food systems in Latin America and the Caribbean face to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger in a sustainable, inclusive and resilient manner. Participants: Leslie Lipper, Economist specialized in Natural Resources with more than 30 years of experience in sustainable agricultural development; Pablo Ibarrarán, Chief of the Social Protection and Health Division of the IDB; and Pedro Martel, Chief of the CSD/RND Division of the IDB.

  • The Role of Trade in Food Security in LAC

This session discussed the importance of trade in promoting food security and the challenges the sector faces in ensuring food availability. It included the participation of Valeria Piñeiro, Acting Head of the Latin America region and Senior Research Coordinator of the International Food Policy Research Institute; Steven Block, Professor of International Economics at Tufts University; Jaime Granados, Chief of the Trade and Investment Division of the IDB; and Pedro Martel, Chief of the CSD/RND Division of the IDB.
