Haiti: Better Environmental and Social Management for Caracol Video

We have been working in the North of Haiti for several years now, and our experience has helped us understand that supporting government agencies is critical for long term environmental and social sustainability. This can be achieved through a combination of both training and the creation and design of appropriate management tools. In a previous blog last year we focused on the ways to improve environmental, social and health and safety (EHS) aspects in Haiti. In particular in the Caracol Industrial Park, we showed how implementing EHS management systems and building capacity is one of the best ways of ensuring EHS performance over time.

As shown in this video, over the last two years we have leveraged special grants funds to create and implement EHS management systems and support capacity building in national and local government agencies. Using an innovative train-the-trainer approach we hope that more and more workers will learn and implement small but important EHS actions, which collectively contribute to a company’s sustainability performance. Additionally, we have developed an EHS management system, hand-in-hand with SONAPI –the government agency in charge of managing industrials parks in Haiti. This is a great example of how the IDB is fostering best practices in EHS aspects for companies and workers in the manufacturing sector of Haiti.
