Do you want to know what is essential for the socio-environmental management of projects?

April 30, 2019 por Lara Chinarro Leave a Comment

To help increase the capacities of counterparts and executing agencies in matters of environmental and social risk management, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) offers its course on Principles for Review of Environmental Impact Studies – PREIA. With more than 400 certificated participants in three languages, this online course explains international good practices through practical work and development of “know-how”.

To whom are the courses directed?

The courses are for anyone involved, directly or indirectly, in the environmental and social approval and licensing of development projects. In the course, you will learn to identify the scope of a project, to evaluate what the impacts on the physical environment and on people are, and to apply the hierarchy of mitigation of those impacts to avoid, reduce, mitigate and, as a last resource, compensate them.

Why is this the most appropriate course for me?

The courses are designed with a specific audience in mind. For the English courses, the case studies focus on the Caribbean. The participants will also be able to interact with people from the same region, who have similar ministerial structures, and benefit from the exchange of experiences with other people in analogous positions in sister organizations in their neighboring countries.

What makes this course different?

One of the participants in the latest edition said: “I would like to personally thank you for a very informative, interactive, interesting, challenging and essential forum discussions throughout this course. I had no prior experience with drafting or reviewing EIAs, however, […] I saw a need to get knowledge. Further, having gained an insight into the process, I have great prospects of possibly working on drafting EIAs or being engaged in the review process of an EIA’s with local consultants. I thoroughly enjoyed the networking process throughout the region. The format was professionally presented.

Although the courses have a cost, there are ways to reduce it. For those who register up to three weeks before the start of the course, or who are part of a group of 4 or more people, there is a 50% discount. Students with excellent performance can benefit from additional discounts in the following courses taken from our program.

The IDB offers all courses on social and environmental risk management in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. Besides the PREIA, you can take the course on Biodiversity in Environmental Impact Assessments, which will help you improve your knowledge on the incorporation of biodiversity in EIA processes, and on Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement, with which you will acquire an overview of principles and content of a good consultation process, with general guidelines to adapt the process to each case. All courses in the catalog are offered three times a year (spring, summer, and fall). Register now!
