The 10 Commandments of Sustainability

April 21, 2014 por Agustín Cáceres - Anamaría Núñez Zelaya Leave a Comment

Today we celebrate Earth Day. To preserve our planet’s natural resources of is not only a matter for political and international organizations: we can all do our bit by adopting a more sustainable lifestyle. If you also believe in sustainability, here are 10 commandments you can follow.

There could be nine, there could be eleven. We do not seek to be dogmatic. Quite the contrary. Sustainability gives meaning to our work, and we ask you to help us promote it in our daily lives.

10mandamientos_EN_social-01

10 gallons (40 liters) of water are lost in a five minute shower. If you leave the tap open while brushing your teeth, 2.6 gallons (ten liters) of water are lost.

10mandamientos_EN_social-02

Transporting products from distant places causes high CO2 emissions.

10mandamientos_EN_social-03

To give you an example: 11 button batteries can pollute 1.7 milion gallons (6.5 million liters) of water. Really.

10mandamientos_EN_social-04

Plastic bags cause over 100,000 sea turtle deaths each year.

10mandamientos_EN_social-05

Leaving your bedroom light on for two hours emits up to 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of CO2 into the atmosphere.

10mandamientos_EN_social-06

It is one of the three things they say to do in life (besides writing a book and having a child).
Besides, in a year, a single tree cleans air polluted by 200 cars in one day.

10mandamientos_EN_social-07

Transportation is responsible for 31% of CO2, 45 % oil and 50% of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere.
What’s more, if you bike 30 minutes, you burn more than 200 calories.

10mandamientos_EN_social-08

Soda cans and disposable cups take a decade to decompose.

10mandamientos_EN_social-09

More than 40% of the wood harvested in the world goes into paper production.

10mandamientos_EN_social-10

Only 15% of waste produced is recycled, 37% is disposed in landfills, 30% in open dumps and 18% are burned. Consume less, live more.
