Digital Utilities of the Future: New frontiers in Energy and Telecommunications shared services

April 13, 2023 por Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered how electric power and telecommunications could be combined to improve infrastructure in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)? Certainly there is a lot of synergy in several countries in the region for both sectors.

For this reason, on April 19 at 2:00 p.m. (ET) the IDB, in collaboration with the Association of Latin American Electricity Distributors (ADELAT), will hold a virtual workshop “Digital utilities of the future: new frontiers in shared services of energy and telecommunications“.

Why is this topic important for Latin America and the Caribbean?

The synergy between the energy and telecommunications sectors can generate important benefits for society in terms of efficiency, costs, and quality of services. The installation of fiber optics or satellite telecommunication in electrical networks can allow greater transmission capacity and better energy management. In addition, the integration of electrical systems with off-grid solutions can contribute to bringing basic telecommunications services to rural or remote areas.

By integrating the electrical energy and telecommunications infrastructure, it is possible to implement intelligent energy management technologies, which allow the optimization of energy consumption and the reduction of waste. Furthermore, integration can also lead to better demand management, allowing energy to be directed more efficiently to the areas that need it most. Also, this can lead to cost reduction, as deploying a single infrastructure can be cheaper than deploying two separate ones.

Especially in LAC, this integration can bring various benefits, mainly in developing countries, where the energy and telecommunications infrastructure is not yet adequate. Unification can improve energy efficiency, reduce costs, improve the quality of telecommunication services, and increase system resilience. In addition, it can also promote economic and social development, allowing the implementation of new technologies and the creation of new businesses.

The workshop will address how telecommunications technologies can be integrated into projects for new electrical networks and what are the business models in operation. It will also be discussed how the current regulatory frameworks in both sectors are prepared for this change and the challenges they still face. Participants will include representatives of LAC countries’ energy and telecommunications regulatory agencies, government representatives, as well as power distribution companies and telecommunications companies.

If you want to learn more about the possible synergies between the energy and telecommunications sectors and the benefits of sharing infrastructure in these sectors, this virtual event organized by the IDB and ADELAT is an unmissable opportunity. We hope you will join us to learn from the success stories and challenges in the region.

Don’t miss the workshop on April 19 at 2:00 PM (ET) to be part of the discussion on such an important topic. Register now!
