Exactly one year ago, I undertook with my family the return to my beloved Argentina, after almost 16 years of living between the United States and Canada. I left without children, I returned with 3. And, like all parents, what worried me the most before moving was their insertion in the new life. A crucial component of this insertion: the school environment.

Daniel and Sebastián are very close friends and since they were little their parents have taken them to play at the same park in Bogotá. Both are in their third year of primary school. They both want to be doctors when they grow up. However, only one of the two can achieve it. Daniel lives in unfavorable socioeconomic conditions, Sebastian does not.

Daniel y Sebastián son muy amigos y desde pequeños sus padres los han llevado a jugar al mismo parque en Bogotá. Ambos están en su tercer año de primaria. Ambos quieren ser médicos cuando sean grandes. Sin embargo, sólo uno de los dos podrá lograrlo. Daniel vive en condiciones socioeconómicas desfavorables, Sebastián no.

On November 9, the 2017 ALAS-IDB (Inter-American Development Bank) Early Childhood Development Awards were distributed in the four categories of best early childhood educator, best early childhood center, best children’s book, and best innovation in early childhood education. The work of each of the finalists resonated deeply with me. Lessons about hope and common humanity leapt from the pages of beautiful new books, like “Tamika” by Tamara Vidaurrazaga, a story about two young girls with the same name that demonstrates how we can overcome our differences.
